A 101-year-old building, three incarnations – a journey through the architectural history of the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum.
Join us for a tour of a building with a remarkable past. Erected in 1925 as a luxury hotel and designed by architect Moshe Cherner, it later served as City Hall before beginning its new life about 2 years ago as the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum. We will explore how its commanding position atop the hill at the heart of the city's cultural and commercial center shaped its design and discover its distinctive Neo-Classical style. From the Mayor’s circular balcony, we will look out over Bialik Square – where examples of the Eclectic Eretz-Israeli style of the 1920s stand alongside the International Style Bauhaus architecture that defines Tel Aviv of the 1930s.
We will trace the building's restoration and preservation in 2009, when Tel Aviv marked its centennial, and go behind the scenes of the museum's founding as a home for all the city's residents. A highlight of the tour is the recently completed renovation of the Mayor’s office, which offers a fascinating window into the past – including a rare copy of the Book of Tel Aviv, edited by Alter Druyanov, chronicling the early days of little Tel Aviv.
What's in store? A guided tour of the museum focusing on the building's architectural history, behind-the-scenes stories, and the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum's community vision, as expressed through its collection of stories.
